Free State cricket mourns the passing of Seppe Lusardi─── MORGAN PIEK 09:25 Tue, 14 Apr 2026
Free State Cricket is in mourning following the passing of former General Manager, Guiseppe “Seppe” Lusardi.
Lusardi, who served in the role for 12 years from 1992 to 2004, passed away on Saturday afternoon at the age of 77.
His contribution to Free State cricket extended far beyond the boardroom. Lusardi also represented the province on the field, playing eight matches between the 1977/78 and 1982/83 seasons. A right-handed batter and wicketkeeper, he featured in seven first-class matches and one List A (one-day) fixture, scoring 128 first-class runs with a highest score of 33.

Lusardi had been battling illness since December 2025 before his passing. The loss comes after an especially difficult period for the family, following the death of his wife, Juliette, in September 2024. It has undoubtedly been a deeply trying time for the Lusardi family.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Lusardi’s son, Carlo, paid tribute to his father:
“Dad,
Today, I stand here not just as your son, but as a man shaped by your hands, your words, and your strength. You were my first hero - the one who taught me how to ride a bike, how to braai, and, more importantly, how to stand tall when life knocked me down.

You worked hard, often without complaint, so that our family could have what we needed. I remember the late nights when you came home tired but still made time to ask about my day. Your laughter filled our home, and your advice - even when I didn’t want to hear it - always came from a place of deep love.
You showed me what it means to be a man of integrity: to keep your word, to treat people with respect, and to provide for those you love. You weren’t perfect - no one is - but your love was steady and unwavering. In your quiet way, you taught me resilience, kindness, and the value of family above all else.
Dad, thank you for every sacrifice you made, every lesson you shared, and every moment we spent together. I carry a piece of you in everything I do. Your legacy lives on in me and in the grandchildren who will hear stories about the great man you were.
I miss you more than words can say. Rest easy, knowing that I will live a life that would make you proud. I love you, always.
Your son, Carlo”
Lusardi is survived by his children Carlo, Vilani and Liz-Mare, as well as seven grandchildren, and his godchildren, Liza and Martin.
He will be laid to rest on Saturday, with details of the memorial service still to be confirmed.
