All or nothing for Bafana Bafana against Korea─── MORGAN PIEK 12:56 Wed, 24 Jun 2026
It is do-or-die for Bafana Bafana in the early hours of Thursday morning when they take on Korea in Monterrey in their final Group A fixture of the 2026 Football World Cup.
With the tournament entering the decisive final round of group-stage matches, South Africa still have a mathematical chance of progressing to the knockout stages, but they will need everything to go their way.
The equation is relatively simple. Bafana must beat a dangerous Korean side and then hope the result between co-hosts Mexico and Czechia in Mexico City works in their favour.

However, luck may need to play a significant role as South Africa have struggled badly in front of goal throughout the tournament. In fact, their attacking woes stretch back to before the World Cup kicked off in North and Central America.
Bafana’s only goal of the tournament came from the penalty spot when the suspended Teboho Mokoena converted in the 1–1 draw against Czechia. Aside from that strike, clear-cut chances have been few and far between, with South Africa offering little threat in the final third.
Head coach Hugo Broos, who could potentially be overseeing his final match in charge of the national team, acknowledged the magnitude of the occasion and the opportunity awaiting his players. “It’s a special game for both teams and we know we have to win,” said Broos.
“Being in the second round of the World Cup would be historic for South Africa. That is a huge motivation for us to go out there and win the game.
“This is a difficult game because we have to win and the question is: what are we going to do? Do we go all-out from the start and try to get an early goal, or do we ease our way into the game?
“It is difficult to choose, but at the same time it is easy because we have to win. I think it is the same question the South Koreans are asking themselves.

“A draw is enough for them to qualify for the next round, but that is not easy either. Our situation is much simpler because there is only one thing we have to do, and that is win the game. That is exactly what we are going for.”
South Africa will be without Teboho Sithole and veteran midfielder Themba Zwane, who are both serving suspensions following their red cards. There is, however, a boost for Bafana with defender Yaya Sithole available again after serving his suspension following his dismissal in the 2-0 opening defeat to Mexico.
Sithole said the squad remains highly motivated and united ahead of what could be one of the biggest matches in recent South African football history.

“The only thing we need to do tomorrow is win the match if we want to qualify. We are more than motivated for that,” said Sithole.
“Everyone is supportive, including the coach. He supports us very well. That is what makes us such a good team because in our group we have very good human beings.”
Thursday morning's crucial Group A encounter between South Africa and Korea at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey kicks off at 03:00 while Mexico and Czechia will battle it out simultaneously in Mexico City.
