Gone are the days when being vegan was taboo; it has transformed into a lifestyle for many, 2% of the South African population is vegan.

Vegans adhere to the principle of removing all animal-derived products from their diet and way of life. Beyond food, many vegans also reject leather, wool, silk, and products tested on animals, as well as anything made through animal exploitation in clothing, cosmetics, and home goods.

Here’s a list of celebrities who will definitely be celebrating World Vegan Day:

  • Lewis Hamilton: The seven-time Formula One champion has been vegan for seven years, having made the switch due to his advocacy for animal welfare.
  • Woody Harrelson: The Hollywood actor, known for his role in The Hunger Games, has been vegan for more than 30 years. He even requested a vegan Twinkie while preparing for a film role.
  • Billie Eilish: Raised in a vegetarian household, the singer has since transitioned to a vegan diet. She often encourages her fans to adopt veganism and protests against animal abuse.

Many people think a vegan diet is bland and boring, but the options are endless and delicious. Here’s a list of tasty vegan dishes that might convince you to try it:

  • Crispy Buffalo Cauliflower Bites
  • Loaded Potato Skins
  • Zucchini Fritters
  • “No-Tuna” Salad Sandwich
  • No-Fry Fried Rice
  • Dilly Vegan Macaroni Salad

Research has shown vegan diets can provide numerous health benefits, such as reducing the risk of heart disease, hypertension, and Type 2 diabetes. A significant aspect of veganism is its sustainable impact on the planet, as animal agriculture is one of the major contributors to deforestation, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.

World Vegan Day serves as a reminder to consider how our food and lifestyle choices affect the environment, human health, and animal welfare. Why not challenge yourself to be vegan for a day?
