On the eve of Israeli elections, incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has said that should he win another term in office he will annex the Israeli-occupied Palestinian West Bank - in defiance of international law.

Netanyahu’s bold declaration, which has already ignited Palestinian anger and is viewed as extremely provocative, follows US President Donald Trump’s recent recognition of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights as sovereign Israeli territory, a move slammed by the international community, including the European Union (EU).

Following Trump’s recognition, Syria has declared that force is the only alternative option left to regain its territory, which is viewed as occupied under international law.

The Israeli premier, who is currently the strongest contender for victory, has also stated that there will be no Palestinian state and that no Israeli settlement in the West Bank will be evacuated.

"A Palestinian state will endanger our existence and I withstood huge pressure over the past eight years, no prime minister has withstood such pressure. We must control our destiny," the premier said.

Netanyahu has also vowed that Jerusalem will remain united eternally as Israel’s capital.

"I will not divide Jerusalem, I will not evacuate any community, and I will make sure we control the territory west of Jordan."

The Palestinians want to establish a future state in the West Bank and Gaza with East Jerusalem as its capital.
