TikTok pledges $10 million to Vaccine Alliance in response to #Covid19─── 18:00 Thu, 30 Apr 2020
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, popular short-form video platform TikTok will be donating US$10 million (about R182m) to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, is a public-private partnership that helps to immunise children against some of the world’s deadliest diseases in Africa.
In a statement, TikTok said in these difficult times they are committed to supporting communities that have been adversely affected, in ways that are positive and beneficial.
By means of this donation, TikTok aims to support efforts both for routine vaccination against existing infectious diseases in Africa and for the future roll-out of future Covid-19 vaccines.
The donation will be matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation through its support to the Gavi Matching Fund, a public-private funding mechanism aimed at encouraging private sector investments in immunisation, bringing the total package of support to $20m.
“We believe this support can go a long way in the improvement of a robust and sustainable immunisation programme in African countries, in particular ensuring equal access to the future Covid-19 vaccines,” TikTok said in a statement.
Last month, TikTok announced its partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), which aims to provide its users with accurate information from public health officials as well as encouragement and uplifting videos.
“TikTok was created to inspire creativity and bring joy to the community,” said TikTok.
Recently, TikTok has also partnered with organisations such as Red Cross South Africa and Unicef South Africa on various educational campaigns related to health and safety guidelines.
Dr Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, thanked TikTok for its constant support and efforts in fighting the spread of Covid-19.
“The results we’ve achieved over the past two decades have only been possible thanks to the unique combination of expertise from our global public sector partners and the business acumen, creativity and entrepreneurship of the private sector,” said Berkley.
