The World Health Organisation announced on Wednesday that three trial vaccines against the strain of Ebola wreaking havoc in Uganda will be delivered to the East African country for testing next week.

A total of 55 people have died and another 22 are thought to have perished since Uganda declared an Ebola epidemic on September 20. Cases have spread throughout the nation, even to the capital, Kampala.

The Sudan virus strain, for which there is presently no vaccination, has proved difficult for Uganda to contain.

However, Tedros Ghebreyesus, the head of the UN health agency, assured reporters that vaccination testing will start shortly.

Speaking from the G20 conference in Indonesia, he said that after reviewing potential vaccinations, a WHO team of outside specialists concluded that "all three should be included in the scheduled study in Uganda".

The committee's suggestion was adopted by the WHO and the Ugandan health ministry.
