Charlize Theron’s comments make international headlines─── 14:37 Fri, 18 Nov 2022
Hollywood Actress Charlize Theron’s comments about Afrikaans have not only created a firestorm in South Africa, but they’re also making international headlines.
The 47-year-old Oscar winner said in a podcast there are about 44 people still speaking Afrikaans… and that "it’s definitely a dying language, it’s not a very helpful language".
The Guardian, calling Afrikaans a settler language, reports her comments have prompted anger in her native South Africa, while the Daily Mail writes South Africans branded her 'disrespectful' and accused her of making the comments to 'appease Hollywood'.
Other news outlets reporting on Theron's comments include the Jakarta Times of Indonesia, the Ghana Report, Harare Live and the Gulf News in Dubai.
News24, who broke the story, reports the Mad Max actress has remained tight-lipped on the attention her interview has received.
The official social media pages for the podcast SmartLess, which often responds to their followers' comments, have also remained mum on responses received for the episode.
