Storm Mocha: Deaths reported as cyclone hits Bangladesh─── 05:33 Mon, 15 May 2023
Tens of thousands of people who live along Bangladesh's and Myanmar's coasts are taking refuge as the two countries are being hit by Storm Mocha, an extraordinarily violent cyclone that made landfall on Sunday.
According to the Myanmar Meteorological Department, Mocha was blown ashore in the Rakhine state of Myanmar close to the municipality of Sittwe.
However, a densely populated cluster of refugee camps in low-lying neighbouring Bangladesh were largely spared.
The storm tore the roofs off of buildings and damaged homes, transformers, mobile phone masts, boats, and lampposts. In Myanmar, there have been reports of at least three deaths.
In Bangladesh, a nation of around 160 million people, more than 1,500 cyclone shelters have been built, while more than 10,000 villagers in Myanmar have been urged to seek refuge in strong structures including temples, schools, and monasteries.
