Kimberley - Two employees of the Sol-Plaatje municipality were arrested in Kimberley today after being found in possession of stolen municipal property.
Police spokesperson Olebogeng Tawana says the suspects, both aged 49, were arrested during a routine police search.
They were found in possession of 61 water meters.
Tawana says the suspects were cuffed en route to a local scrapyard where the items were to be sold.
He says the suspects confessed to stealing the items from the water works storeroom.
Both men are expected to appear in the Kimberley magistrate’s court tomorrow on theft and possession of illegal goods charges.
This has not been first time that Sol-Plaatje municipal officials have caught stealing.
Last year, officials were arrested and charged for stealing fuel from the municipality’s garage and illegally selling it to locals.
