Welkom - Students at the Goldfields FET College in Welkom are still not attending classes. They are protesting against an 80% attendance policy to qualify to write exams.
The strike has been ongoing for more than a week. Goldfields’ Director Lynette Fourie says the college experienced the same problem last year and decided to abolish the policy in the interim.
However, she says after consultation with stakeholders it was decided that the policy be re-implemented in January.
Fourie says the college receives funding from the National Skills Fund which requires an 80 percent attendance for students.
