Bloemfontein - The funeral of Olwethu Mpedi, who was killed allegedly by her father, is currently underway at the South Park Cemetery in Bloemfontein.
Last month, Mpedi's body was found buried in a toilet pit at her home in Bergman Square. It's believed she was killed seven years ago, when she was seven years old. Mpedi's sister reported the matter to police after years of silence.
Her father, Xolile Makhubela, who has since been arrested for the murder, allegedly threatened her with death if she reported the matter.
Makhubela, who has been on the run for years, was previously arrested for the 1999 murder of his mother and father-in-law in the Eastern Cape, as well as the attempted murder of Mpedi's grandmother.
He however skipped bail and allegedly kidnapped Mpedi from his mother-in-law in 2006. He had also failed to make a court appearance for a rape case in Bloemfontein, prior to his arrest. He is in custody and will apply for bail tomorrow.
The funeral is being attended by Free State MEC for Social Development, Sisi Ntombela, and members of the ANC Women’s League.
