Vredefort - A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of three people, including two children, at Palmietkuil farm in Vredefort on Saturday.
This after 50-year-old farm supervisor, Hansie Raath, and two boys, aged 11 and 15 respectively, were shot dead on Saturday evening.
Free State police spokesperson Masilela Langa says a 35-year-old man was arrested in connection with the shooting while a 30-year-old was apprehended as an accomplice, after he allegedly transported the man from Vredefort to a township nearby. He says both were arrested in Maokeng, Kroonstad, on Sunday. One of the suspects threw a gun in the river when the police arrested the pair.
Langa says Raath was having dinner with the 35-year old suspect and six children in the farmhouse when the shooting occurred.
The two boys were shot dead while trying to escape, while the other four boys managed to escape. Langa says the man fled with Raath’s bakkie which was found abandoned near Kroonstad on Sunday. A firearm was also stolen. Both men are expected to appear at the Kroonstad Magistrate's Court soon.
