Artists shocked by students' vandalism of sculptures─── 09:39 Sun, 28 Feb 2016
Bloemfontein - Artists are shocked and saddened by the vandalism of art works by protesting students at the University of the Free State.
Rapport reports that a sculpture from struggle artist Willie Bester and another by Angus Taylor were damaged on the Bloemfontein campus during a week of unrest, which saw lectures cancelled and several students arrested.
Bester told Rapport that his bull rider sculpture, made from scrap metal, which was pulled down and damaged in the rampage, represented inequality and how people needed each other. He added he couldn't understand why people wanted to interfere with history.
Taylor said his slate sculpture, which was torched in front of the agriculture building, was an anti-monument that was created not to represent propaganda. He called on the protesters to be less extreme and to rather create than destroy.
University spokesperson, Lacea Loader, was quoted saying they are still estimating the damage.
Protestors Tuesday tore down the statue of former state president CR Swart and also tried to topple the MT Steyn statue.
