Academic environment at the Mafikeng campus must be normalised: Kgwadi─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 08:49 Tue, 29 Mar 2016
Mahikeng - The North West University (NWU) wants to restore a normal academic environment when its Mafikeng campus reopens today.
The campus was closed for nearly a month after riots and protests by students and other involved parties.
The NWU’s Vice Chancellor, Dan Kgwadi, says a second security company has been appointed after the company contracted at the time of the protests was suspended pending an investigation into allegations that live ammunition was used on students.
Kgwadi confirmed that the NWU still has a contract with a second security company and their assistance will be called in when needed. The company is however not in charge of the campus at the moment.
Kgwadi says it will take more than 18 months to repair the damage done to buildings on campus. The administration building and the science centre were set alight during the violent protests.
Meanwhile staff members who cannot return to their offices are being accommodated elsewhere on campus.
