Ficksburg - Two deceased schoolgirls from Ficksburg in the Free State who drowned yesterday have been identified as Primrose Ramoroho and Caroline Nthangoe.

They were aged 7 and 17 years old respectively.

According to Free State police spokesperson, Phumelelo Dlamini, the Ficksburg police were alerted about the drowned girls at about 13:30 by community members. Upon arrival at the scene, which is in Zone Six in Meqheleng, police found the pair in a stream leading to the Caledon river - which borders South Africa and Lesotho.

It is thought they were walking alone from school when they were swept away by a flash flood.

Dlamini told OFM News that an inquest docket has been opened.
