Potchefstroom - Eskom has yet to receive payment from four defaulting municipalities in North West and the Northern Cape, and as a result residents will face twice daily power cuts.

Eskom spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe says the Ubuntu and Renosterberg municipalities in the Northern Cape, and the Lekwa-Teemane and Kgetleng Rivier municipalities in North West will face cuts from today. Twelve towns are affected across the four municipalities.

Phasiwe says the Maquassi Hills municipality in North West approached Eskom this morning with a payment plan and made provisions to repay its debt to the energy supplier.

Phasiwe meanwhile says Naledi municipality in North West remains one of Eskom's biggest problems. "Naledi has been experiencing power cuts since Monday. If they do not settle their bill or come up with a plan then unfortunately we are going to interrupt their power supply again this afternoon from 17:00. We are hopeful though that we will have some interventions from the provincial government so that we can bring an end to this impasse” Phasiwe added.

Eskom said in astatement it will be monitoring the municipalities adherence to the agreed uponplans, adding that any defaults will result in the interruption of supplywithout further notice.
