Macufe goes ahead, despite budget cuts | News Article

Bloemfontein - The annual Mangaung Arts and Culture Festival, better known as Macufe, will continue despite tight cost containment measures in the Free State provincial government.

Finance MEC Elzabe Rockman allocated  more than R687m for the 2017/2018 financial year to the provincial department of sport, arts and culture in yesterday's budget speech.

She said some of the key priorities for this department includes the 20 year anniversary of MACUFE. The festival was launched in 1997 and although it was supposed to become self-sustainable – its budget grew with millions over the years. Opposition parties have called for an overhaul of the festival several times over the years. Rockman’s department however conducted a feasibility study that found that the investment in the province during Macufe is worth millions more than the allocation from the provincial department of sports, arts and culture.
