Mahikeng - The North West Department of Human Settlements says the continuous increase of informal settlements is one of the reasons why there is a massive housing backlog in the province.

Spokesperson, Ben Bole, says the department is hosting a two-day Human Settlements Indaba today and tomorrow to discuss means to address issues of housing backlogs, irregular issuing of RDP houses and the illegal occupancy of these houses by illegal migrants.

“One of the problems that cause a housing backlog is on the basis that when the government has earmarked to develop a certain area, the next day informal human settlements mushroom there and that on its own takes us back as government”.

Bole says the indaba will be attended by various stakeholders including the Minister of Human Settlements, Lindiwe Sisulu. He says the selling of RDP houses by beneficiaries will also top the list of what will be addressed at the indaba.
