UFS SRC working to prevent deregistrations─── MARK STEENBOK 17:20 Wed, 19 Apr 2017

Bloemfontein - The Student Representative Council (SRC) president at the University of the Free State (UFS) says they will continue to engage with management to come up with solutions to help students facing deregistration.
Sikhululekile Luwaca says preliminary figures suggest that 337 students at the Bloemfontein campus face the possibility of being deregistered. The Free Education Movement (FES) at the university earlier indicated that they will not allow any students who do not meet funding criteria to be deregistered. Luwaca says it is a matter of principle to help financially needy and academically deserving students.
“We have opened a process where we say students must come see the SRC, from now up until Friday, so that we can look at it on a case by case basis. We entered into a combined fundraising initiative with the university management, up until now we have managed to raise R2.1 million,” says Luwaca.
A group of 27 students were arrested during protests against deregistration at the university's Qwaqwa campus in March.
