Thaba Nchu - The increasing number of farm murders in the Free State is of great concern and urgently needs to be attended to.

This is according to DA leader Mmusi Maimane.

Speaking on the state of increasing unemployment and crime in the province, Maimane said local farmers are becoming a target of stock theft, murder and other criminal activities.

Addressing the party’s provincial elective congress in Thaba Nchu, yesterday, Maimane said the province is continuously being failed.

“The attack of farmers should not be a racial issue. It should be an issue that affects all of us, because farmers feed the nation and farm workers are equally affected.”

Maimane says the province should be looking at avenues of dealing with the drought situation and assisting farmers, but the provincial government is not doing much about that problem.

Tomorrow, farmer support organisation, Boere In Nood, will participate in the national black Monday movement where South Africans are requested to wear black to put the focus on rural safety.

Organiser Frikkie van der Walt explains that participants will gather at the filling station across from Windmill on the Jagersfontein Road at 7am on Monday.

The motorcade will depart an hour later.

Van der Walt says no pedestrians will be allowed and all participants must be in or on the back of a vehicle.

They will hand over a memorandum to police as well.
