Lesufi hounded from both sides following Overvaal judgment─── DANE BEISHEIM 16:47 Tue, 16 Jan 2018
The South African Communist Party (SACP) in Gauteng has slammed yesterday’s ruling by the North Gauteng High Court to set aside the Gauteng department of education's instruction to the Afrikaans medium Overvaal High School in Vereeniging.
The department's instruction to the Afrikaans medium Overvaal High School in Vereeniging was to admit 55 extra Grade Eight pupils - to be taught in English.
Judge Bill Prinsloo, in handing down his judgment, said the school has no capacity to receive the pupils, let alone on such short notice and effectively convert to a dual medium school.
In a statement issued today, the SACP said it is urging the MEC for Education in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi, to urgently appeal this ruling.
The SACP says the ruling contradicts the efforts of the government to transform the education system at large for the benefit of the majority of learners.
Meanwhile, Anton Alberts of the FF Plus has indicated the party will lodge a formal criminal complaint against Lesufi.
“One of the apparent sms messages sent to one of the principals asked ‘Why are you helping an Afrikaans school?’ which just shows you the biases of the education department themselves. So, we believe there are a few criminal actions that have been perpetrated as a result and we will be lodging criminal cases tomorrow,” Alberts added.
The charges will be laid tomorrow at the SAPD offices in Commissioner Street in central Johannesburg at 11:00.
