Verkeerdevlei Toll Plaza blocked by strike─── NOMAQHAWE MTEBELE 12:34 Tue, 13 Mar 2018
Motorists have been requested to use an alternative route after the Verkeerdevlei Toll Plaza was blocked by a Sanral strike today.
There is heavy traffic congestion on the N1 southbound, as only two lanes out of twelve are open at the toll plaza. Motorists are asked to avoid the route and to use the R703 via Brandfort instead. Parts of Gauteng were also affected as highways were closed off to traffic.
The other gateways that were affected include Grasmere Toll Plaza on the N1, as well as the Ennerdale and Quagga Plazas on the N4. According to Verkeerdevlei Toll Plaza’s Pule Mokone, the strike began today and is intended to proceed until an agreement is reached with the worker’s union, the National Transport Movement (NTM).
“Traffic is too slow because of the strike. Traffic remains slow and there is a long cue,” said Mokone. The striking workers are not violent or causing any damage, according to Mokone.
