Residents in three FS municipalities to face power outages | News Article

Residents and businesses in more than ten towns in the Free State might have to do without electricity, as of tomorrow, while the rest of the world commemorate Madiba Day.

This, as Eskom threatens to cut power supply to three municipalities due to their non-payment. Three municipalities, namely Tokologo, Masilonyana and Nala Local Municipalities, have once again defaulted on their payment agreements with Eskom and as a result, could face power interruptions for up to six hours a day if no payments are made.

Tokologo Municipality, which includes the towns of Boshof, Dealesville, Hertzogville and Seretse, owe Eskom close to R30 million. Masilonyana Municipality, which includes the towns of Brandfort, Soutpan, Theunissen, Verkeerdevlei, and Winburg, owes R54 million, while Nala Municipality, covering the towns of Bothaville and Wesselsbron, owes more than R181 million.

Municipalities in the province collectively make up 40 % of the debt owed to Eskom.

The Free State is currently the province with the highest Eskom debt and defaulting municipalities. Eskom spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe, previously told OFM News municipalities in this province owe the power utility more than R6.5 billion, which is the highest amount owed by municipalities across the country.
