FS Education and Health financial woes under scrutiny─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 09:39 Sun, 02 Sep 2018
Two Free State Departments that continue to receive the biggest chunk of the provincial budget will this week come under scrutiny.
This, as the Portfolio Committee on Public Accounts and Finance are expected to consider the Health and Education Departments’ quarterly expenditure reports on Thursday.
The two departments have recently started managing their own finances after years of having been under administration. Finance MEC, Elzabe Rockman, previously told OFM News that the Education Department’s high salary bill was a major concern for her and that, despite the department being underfunded, this often posed a number of challenges within the province.
She said the Health Department’s litigation and salary costs was also a cause for concern.
The Education Department was this year allocated the biggest chunk of the provincial budget – more than R13.5 billion, while Health received more than R10.4 billion.
How they have thus far spent their budgets will be the biggest question in the Provincial Legislature’s sitting later this week.
