Electricity supplier Centlec says they were caught by surprise that some of their workers at the Bloemfontein offices decided to down tools yesterday (on Wednesday) in an effort to highlight their grievances.

The entities‘ spokesperson, Lele Mamatu, told OFM News that they can however assure the public that their services won’t be disrupted and that the workers have resumed their duties.

Mamatu says the gathering by the workers outside the Centlec building in the Free State was illegal, and the utility’s Chief Executive Officer, Andries Mgoqi, has issued a letter instructing all workers to report for duty as expected. He adds that following the Deputy Executive Mayor, Lebohang Masoetsa’s, acceptance of the workers’ memorandum of demands, they will be awaiting an engagement from the municipality on issues raised by the workers.

These include the improvement of working conditions, an end to nepotism and tender fraud as well as the permanent employment of workers currently in acting positions. The workers are further calling for the axing of Mqoqi on allegations that he has run the entity into a state of disarray and ignores concerns of the workers.

Workers demand that the CEO vacate office within 48 hours, and they expect feedback from the metro before this time.
