The areas and villages surrounding the Sun City resort outside Rustenburg in the North West have been moderately affected by the hail storm and flash flooding that occurred yesterday afternoon.

North West police have confirmed the villages in the area were affected by the storm, which began at around 16:00,  but no damage in those villages were reported from the residents .

The Sun City police station on the other hand has been negatively affected.

The phone lines are down and authorities say “there is no communication through the telephone lines to the station”.

Surrounding lodges tell OFM News they were left unaffected and as a result have not evacuated any of their holiday makers.

Police report that there was no loss of life in the storm.

Meanwhile, mop up operations are underway at the Sun International Resort, which was severely hit by the storm.

Media reports indicate that the resort has confirmed the situation is now under control.

In a statement released on Saturday night, December 15,  Sun International said the areas substantially damaged by the incident are” the Sun City Central family and entertainment precinct”.

It has been reported that roughly 80 rooms at the Soho Hotel, 40 rooms at the Cabanas, 30 at the Cascades Hotel, 26 at the Vacation Club, and 20 at The Palace were also severely affected.

The statement goes on to say that “day visitors were immediately evacuated and bused away from badly affected areas.

The resort’s emergency services are on the ground and continuing to assess the extent of damage”.

In an interview with ANA, Chief Operations Officer (COO) Thabo Mosololi has also confirmed that “two people sustained injuries from slipping on wet floor They were treated at the onsite clinic before being transferred to nearby hospitals. We will continue to update as more information is available."

Holiday makers who were booked to arrive yesterday afternoon onwards have been told to check with each hotel if there are rooms available.

Certain sections will however be open on Sunday for day visitors.

"Sun City can confirm that Sun Central and the Valley of the Waves will be open today [Sunday] for day visitors and hotel guests," Mosololi said.
