Two accidents have been recorded on the R30 between Bothaville and Orkney.


One accident that was recorded at about 04:30 on Friday morning during a head-on collision on the R30 left one person critically injured while one person experienced minor injuries. In a shocking twist of events, just 22 minutes apart on the same road, another accident was recorded at about 04:45 when a minibus taxi overturned leaving one person with moderate injuries, two people with minor injuries and one dead on the scene. All patients were transported to Nala Hospital in Bothaville in the Free State for further care.

The transport minister, Blade Nzimande, yesterday revealed that light motor cars contributed to 47% of the total crashes, light delivery vehicles 21%, minibuses 7%, and trucks 5%. The highest percentage increase was recorded in the Northern Cape with 71%, followed by the Free State with 53%, and KwaZulu-Natal with 46%. KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of fatalities 162, followed by Gauteng at 125. Limpopo and Eastern Cape had 89 fatalities each, while Mpumalanga had 82, Western Cape 99, Free State 78, North West 57, and Northern Cape 24.
