Hundreds of seized knives to be destroyed─── 14:22 Wed, 07 Sep 2011

Thabong - Thabong police will soon destroy the hundreds, if not thousands, of knives seized during operations conducted over the last six months. Warrant officer Malebo Khosana said in a statement there are also pangas, butcher knives, Okapi’s and grass cutters converted into swords included among the pile of weapons. He said the weapons were seized by members of Crime Prevention, Community Service Centre (CSC), Partnership Policing and Community Police Forum’s Community Patrollers during routine patrols and planned operations.
The cluster also conducted a “No Knife Project” to raise awareness about the dangers of knives and use of knives in crimes such as murder and assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm. He said deaths recorded in Thabong indicated some victims were brutally stabbed with sharp instruments, while others were hacked to death with pangas and other life threatening objects. Thabong police management has decided to destroy all the knives.
Police are also challenging the community to keep Thabong safe by voluntarily handing in dangerous weapons. Station Commander Brigadier Cois Muller said, “Those who bring the knives voluntarily would not be criminally charged. But those who are found in possession of these weapons by us will have to face the wrath of the law.” - Citizen
