Lonmin could afford to pay more
A senior economist says platinum miner Lonmin could easily have afforded to pay its rock drill operators the R12 500 monthly salary they demanded in 2012 if it had the “political will” to do so. Dick Forslund said if the company had used share based payment expenses to its management, and sales commission it paid to a subsidiary in Bermuda, it could have done so “with ease”. Forslund was speaking at the release of a report on Lonmin’s “profit shifting”.

Indien die energiereguleerder, NERSA sy versoek vir 'n bykomende twaalf persent verhoging toestaan, sal die tariewe aanstaande maand met sowat 25 persent styg.
Opposition fails in bid to alter mandate of Nkandla committee
Opposition parties tried in vain yesterday to bring Parliament to pass a motion that would make for extensive scrutiny of Police Minister Nathi Nhleko’s Nkandla report in which he concluded that President Jacob Zuma owes the state nothing for luxury features added to his private home at taxpayers’ expense. Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane brought an amendment to the ANC’s motion to establish an ad hoc committee to process the minister’s 50-page report. He proposed that the committee be ordered to study Nhleko’s report alongside that of Public Protector Thuli Madonsela — who held that Zuma was liable to reimburse the state for additions that did not relate to security — and resolve to call her, the president and Nhleko to appear before it.
EFF says SARS is lying about Malema sequestration
Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has accused the South African Revenue Service of lying about the reasons for withdrawing an application to have a provisional sequestration order against him made final. As it walked away from the legal battle that risked Malema losing his seat in Parliament on Monday, SARS said it was doing so mainly because it had other legal instruments at its disposal to recover taxes owed by the politician. Malema said he had paid all his outstanding debt to SARS, and therefore its bid to force his final sequestration was doomed.
Comair undecided about further legal battle
Airline Comair says it has yet to decide whether it will take its legal battle against South African Airways's bailouts by government further. Yesterday the North Gauteng High Court dismissed Comair's application which sought to challenge a R5 billion package from government paid to the national carrier in 2012. Comair's CEO Erik Venter says their intention is not to stifle SAA's operations but to ensure fair competition in the country's airline industry.
