The Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa says it's been left shocked and horrified by yesterday's attack on a mosque in Verulam - north of Durban.

Knife-wielding assailants entered the Imam Hussain Mosque in Ottawa and stabbed three people.

One of the victims died later in hospital. The council says the attack was the first of its kind at a South African mosque.

The suspects then set a library on fire and fled the scene. The council's Shaykh Isjaak Taliep.

Meanwhile, the Hawks believe there was an element of extremism during the incident.

Spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo would not comment on allegations that the assailants were Egyptian nationals.
