Forensics expert: I gave incorrect evidence at Fred van der Vyver trial─── 17:07 Wed, 08 Dec 2010

Cape Town - A former police forensics expert today admitted that he gave incorrect evidence at the murder trial of Fred van der Vyver. Bruce Bartholomew was testifying in the Cape High Court in Van der Vyver's R46 million malicious prosecution claim against the minister of police. It was Bartholomew who, in the 2007 criminal trial, sought to show that a bloody mark on the floor of the flat of slain Stellenbosch student Inge Lotz was made by a sports shoe belonging to Van der Vyver, her boyfriend. Key to the identification were several white spots in the mark, which Bartholomew maintained at the time were made by grains of sand lodged in a groove in the sole of the shoe. Van der Vyver was tried for and acquitted of Lotz's murder in 2007.
