Surviving NW conjoined twin dies | News Article

Mpho Mathibela, the surviving twin of the previously conjoined twins, passed away after she was admitted to the Tshepong Hospital in Matlosana, North West.

The twins made headlines after they were born with their heads conjoined at the Tshepong Hospital on 7 December 1986.

Mpho and Mphonyana Mathibela were later moved to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, where they were separated in 1988.

Mphonyana, the weaker of the two, passed away after suffering from pneumonia a year later.

Tshepong Hospital spokesperson, Nico Masiu, has said that Mpho passed away on Friday, 7 August 2021, after suffering from lung complications.

He confirmed that Mpho did not have Covid-19, as she tested negative prior to her death.
