The death toll of students who were shot by four gun-wielding men in Botjhabela village near Phuthaditjhaba in Qwaqwa in the Free State has now risen to three.


Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says one of two students who had been hospitalised at Mofumahadi Manapo Regional hospital after sustaining critical gunshots wounds died on Thursday.

On Wednesday a student from the University of the Free State and one from a Maluti TVET College died after they were shot at by alleged robbers who demanded cash, laptops and cellphones. This now brings the number of UFS students who died as result if the brutal shooting to two whilst another student is fighting for his life in hospital.

The police are now investigating cases of double murders and double attempted murders and house robbery.

Makhele says the names of the deceased and injured cannot be released before the next-of-kin have been traced and informed.

"It's further alleged that the students were having a party and drinking when three suspects who were wearing balaclavas came to them demanding cash, laptops and cellphones. The exact number of stolen items is not yet determined at this stage," he adds.  

The students were shot on 22 September 2021 at about 00:40 by unknown suspects who were wearing masks.

"The police found two bodies of males lying on the ground with fatal gunshot wounds. They were identified by their friends. The other two African males were already rushed to Mofumahadi Manapo Regional hospital under critical conditions.
