South Africa’s latest sprinting star, Tshenolo Lemao, is back in Bloemfontein after winning the 100m gold in the IAAF U18 World Championships in Nairobi last week.

The former St Andrews School boy became the first South African ever to win a 100m gold at a world event.

Lemao backed up his gold with a silver in the boys 200m after narrowly being edged by Retshidisitswe Mlenga.

Lemoa entered the 200m final with a hamstring niggle, but told OFM Sport that at no stage he considered withdrawing from the event.

“No, not at all. Obviously I wanted to double up with the two golds so I told myself to just push myself with the little bit of a niggle.

“Anything could have happened, so I just wanted to push myself and see how far I could go.

“I am happy with my effort because it was a personal best, but I was looking for a little bit more.

“A sub-21 would have been perfect.

“But running a PB in the final really means a lot to me, so I’m really happy with the time.

Lemoa’s personal best in the 200m now stands at 21.12.

Lemoa will be in studio on Tuesday afternoon between 16:00 and 17:00 on the Just Plain Drive – be sure not to miss it.
