“On Friday morning Le Clos was second in heat 2 with a time of 52.24 seconds, however, this was not enough to secure a time in the top 16 to advance to the semi-finals.”

There will be no Olympic glory in Paris for South Africa’s golden boy in the pool, Chad le Clos.

The former Olympic champion (32), known as the Phelps Slayer, has failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the 100m butterfly for men in Paris.

Before the Games in Paris, Le Clos, indicated that he had been nursing an injury, but was confident it would not affect his performance.

In 2012, Le Clos set the Olympic Games in London alight when he famously beat the legendary Michael Phelps to the gold in the 200m butterfly. In the 100m butterfly, he won the silver in 51.44sec.

On Friday morning (2/8), Le Clos was second in heat 2 with a time of 52.24sec, however, this was not enough to secure a time in the top 16 to advance to the semi-finals.

He finished in 24th overall, while Matthew Sates, who swam in the same heat, finished in 35th overall with a time of 54.53sec.

South Africa’s only glory in the pool at the Olympics has come the way of the now-retired Tatjana Smith who won the women’s 100m breaststroke gold and on Thursday night and claimed the 200m silver.
