Bloemfontein sprint sensation Burger to represent SA at African Champs─── MORGAN PIEK 11:44 Tue, 01 Jul 2025

The teenage sprint sensation from Bloemfontein, Rumé Burger, will get the chance to test herself on the international stage later this month at the CAA African U18 and U20 Championships in Nigeria.
Burger, who is the senior South African women’s 200m champion, has been included in the national team for the championships, where she will compete in the U18 200m sprint.
In May, the 17-year-old stunned the nation when she won gold in the women’s 200m at the ASA Senior Track and Field Championships in Potchefstroom, clocking a time of 23.49 seconds.

She is one of only three athletes from the Free State included in the 70-member South African squad, and the only one selected in the U18 age group. Carise van Rooyen will compete in the U20 women’s 800m, while Cara Smith will take part in the U20 women’s heptathlon.
Burger, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season, told OFM Sport that it has always been her dream to represent South Africa, and she’s incredibly grateful for the opportunity.
“I think the emotions haven’t really kicked in yet,” said Burger.
“I’m so excited to take part in my first international event, and just the thought of having the privilege to run for my country is the greatest honour.
“It’s always been my biggest dream to compete for South Africa, to live out my passion for the sport, and to line up against the best young athletes from across the continent.
“I can’t thank the Lord enough for this incredible opportunity and the talent He has blessed me with. I also want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, and to those who’ve already congratulated me – it means the world.”

Athleticism runs in her blood. Her father, Philip Burger, represented South Africa (Blitzboks or Springbok Sevens) in Sevens rugby and was a highly rated Cheetahs winger. Her grandfather, Thys Burger, played for the Springboks, making his debut in 1980 against the British & Irish Lions – at the very same stadium where Rumé earlier this year broke the national U17 records in both the 100m and 200m, twice each.
The 2025 CAA African U18 and U20 Championships will take place from 16 to 20 July in Abeokuta, Nigeria.
