“Sprinting sensation Femke Bol, who took part in the heats, ran a magnificent final lap to get the gold.”
St Lucia has their first Olympic medal. It is also their first gold medal thanks to a brilliant run by Julien Alfred to win the 100m women’s title on Saturday evening. Alfred (23) stormed to victory in the rain in 10.72 seconds.
American world champion Sha’Carri Richardson, who many favoured for the win, was second in 10.87 while compatriot Melissa Jefferson took bronze in 10.92. Great Brittain’s Daryll Neita finished four-hundredths of a second off the podium in fourth.
Double gold medallist, Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, missed her 100m semifinal earlier in the day after injuring herself in the warm-up. The 37-year-old has earlier hinted that she will retire after the Paris Games. She previously won a silver and bronze over the 100m.
