The Baby Proteas secured their best-ever finish at the Netball Youth World Cup in Gibraltar on Sunday, but weren’t able to medal after falling short against England in the bronze final.

South Africa reached the semi-finals at the World Cup for the first time, but were convincingly beaten 67–36 by the eventual world champions, Australia, on Friday evening.

In the bronze final, England proved too strong for their South African counterparts, claiming the final podium spot with a 55–35 victory. At the end of the first quarter, it was still tight, with the Junior Roses holding a narrow 9–8 lead.

In the second 15-minute period, they pulled away from South Africa, building a 10-goal cushion with a 25–15 lead at half-time. England’s dominance continued in the third quarter, leading 38–25 going into the final period, before adding a further 17 goals to seal the bronze medal.

Following the defeat, South African coach Precious Mthembu lamented her team’s inability to make the most of their opportunities.

“We gave our all against England in this match, but we failed to capitalise on our turnovers. We had so many missed chances, especially when the opponents were vulnerable,” said Mthembu.

“Our attacking duo carried a lot on their shoulders, and fatigue showed – you could see the tired legs and bodies on court today.”

Mthembu added that while the result was not ideal after such high hopes, she is ultimately proud of what her team achieved.

“No one likes to lose, but we will take this loss with the lessons it brought. I am proud of my girls – they have done themselves and the country proud.”

Meanwhile, Australia went on to win the Junior Netball World Cup after beating long-standing rivals New Zealand 63–48 in the final.
