Cheetahs confirm interest in hosting bio-bubble─── MORGAN PIEK 09:42 Thu, 06 Aug 2020
The Toyota Cheetahs have confirmed that they have applied to be the so-called bio-bubble in which domestic rugby should be played.
This comes as SA Rugby considered that all the teams should play out of the same base when matches resume.
The governing body was considering Johannesburg as the venue for all the domestic matches, but they have been seeking an alternate venue.
Bloemfontein and Kimberley would make sense for the bio-bubble due to the cities being central and in close proximity
Free State Rugby CEO, Harold Verster, told OFM Sport that they hope to host the 2020 Currie Cup.
“For starters, we will play in a bio-bubble as they call it. All of the teams will play in one stadium.
“But unfortunately there will be no supporters until the Covid in under control a bit better.
“That is why we say that we can be the host for that bubble. They might have two bubbles - one at the coast and one inland, so we will have to wait and see.
“Hopefully if the virus slows down later on then you can have a number of supporters at the games, but with social distancing protocols in place.
“There are challenges because this virus caught us off-guard. It’s a tough one for people. People have lost their work and people have died. It’s a really tough time, and I never expected this.
“We are working hard behind the scenes to keep rugby afloat.”
A double-round Currie Cup is set to start within the next month if rugby gets the green-light from the government.
