The Griffons are quietly confident but remain cautious as they head into their crucial Currie Cup First Division semi-final against Eastern Province in Welkom on Saturday.

Having finished second on the log after the group stage, the Griffons will enjoy home-ground advantage. However, they are well aware of the threat that Eastern Province poses in this high-stakes knockout clash.

Although the Purple People Eaters claimed a convincing 66–32 win over EP earlier in the competition, they also suffered a setback against Allister Coetzee’s side during the SA Cup. The EP Elephants beat the Griffons 20–14 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, a result that ultimately cost the Welkom team a place in the SA Cup semi-finals and saw them relegated to the First Division.

For the Griffons, reaching this weekend’s final would be a shot at redemption, and they’re determined to do it for their loyal supporters in the Northern Free State.

Versatile front-rower Simon Westraadt told OFM Sport the team is fully committed to giving their fans something to cheer about.

“It was a bit of a disappointment that we didn’t qualify for the Currie Cup Premier Division, but that’s behind us now and out of our control,” said Westraadt, who can slot in at either loosehead prop or hooker.

“We’re excited about this First Division semi-final. Our main goal is to reach the final and take it from there. We’re definitely going to give it our all. Hopefully, things go our way, our game plan comes together, and the boys can pull it through for a big win at home. Then we’ll shift our focus to the final next week.”

Westraadt said it’s important not to get ahead of themselves, but rather to focus on what they can control and that’s delivering a solid performance against the visitors from Gqeberha.

“We’re not looking too far ahead. We’re taking this game very seriously and are just excited to be back in a semi-final – it’s been a while since we’ve been here.

“We want to take one step closer to bringing some silverware home for the people of Welkom. So yes, we’ll give it our absolute best this weekend.”

Saturday’s semi-final at the Down Touch Investments Stadium kicks off at 15:00. At the same time, the log-topping Valke will be up against the Leopards in the other semi-final at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park.
