Wiese slapped with four-match ban─── MORGAN PIEK 13:23 Tue, 15 Jul 2025

Springbok eighth-man Jasper Wiese has been suspended for four matches following his red card against Italy at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Saturday.
The Upington-born Wiese was shown a straight red card in the 22nd minute of the second Test against the Azzurri for headbutting Italian loosehead prop Danilo Fischetti during a heated exchange on the field.
Despite being reduced to 14 men for nearly an hour, the back-to-back world champions still cruised to a 45–0 victory over their Italian opponents.

Wiese was cited for the incident and appeared before a World Rugby Judicial Committee on Sunday. The independent Foul Play Review Committee (FPRC), chaired by Roddy Dunlop KC and including former Welsh players Jamie Corsi and Olly Kohn, reviewed the matter and referred it for a full disciplinary hearing.
The Disciplinary Committee (DC), chaired by Rhian Williams (Wales) and joined by former international match officials Donal Courtney (Ireland) and Valeriu Tomu (Romania), convened on Tuesday.
While Wiese accepted that foul play had occurred, he did not agree that the offence warranted a red card. However, after reviewing the player’s submissions, video footage, and other evidence, the committee upheld the red card.

Although the initial offence fell under Law 9.11 (a player must not act recklessly or dangerously), the committee ruled that it should instead be categorised under Law 9.12 (striking with the head).
As a result, Wiese has been handed a four-match suspension. He will miss this weekend’s Test against Georgia in Mbombela, both Rugby Championship clashes against Australia on 16 and 23 August, and the first Test against New Zealand on 6 September in Auckland.
He will be free to play the second All Blacks Test on 13 September in Wellington.
Wiese has 48 hours to appeal the decision.
