The Toyota Cheetahs’ pre-season is in full swing as they prepare for the 2025 Currie Cup, which kicks off towards the end of July.

The 2024 semi-finalists secured their place in the world’s oldest domestic rugby competition back in May by reaching the semi-finals of the SA Cup.

While they fell short of the final, the Cheetahs showed real progress towards the end of the campaign and will carry some good momentum into the Currie Cup. Unlike the SA Cup, the Cheetahs will have two warm-up matches before the tournament begins – and they promise to be tough.

First up, they’ll face the Suzuki Griquas in Bultfontein, followed by a clash with the Georgian national team in Bloemfontein. The match against Georgia, in particular, is expected to be a real test, as it serves as preparation for their upcoming Test against the Springboks in Nelspruit.

Just a week before facing the Cheetahs, Georgia will take on Ireland in Tbilisi – although it’s likely to be more of an Emerging Ireland side, as the British & Irish Lions will already be in Australia. Many of Georgia’s players also represent Black Lion in the EPCR Challenge Cup – one of two invitational teams in the competition, the other being the Cheetahs.

Cheetahs captain and lock Victor Sekekete told OFM Sport that testing themselves against an international side will be the perfect way to gear up for the Currie Cup, while also helping them raise their overall game.

“I think this pre-season is going to lay the foundation for how we want to play,” Sekekete said. “And like you mentioned, with the warm-up games against Griquas and Georgia leading into the tournament, I believe it's going to be great for us.

“It’s going to set the tone so that we can compete in the Currie Cup at an international level. If we get that right, we’ll be able to play at a good tempo and perform under pressure throughout the competition.

“The Georgia game is going to be really competitive. Like you said, their players are pushing to make the squad for the Bok game. For us, we know it’s not just a warm-up – these guys are going to come out firing, which makes it the kind of challenge we’re looking for.

“Both teams have players who’ve played in the EPCR, which just adds another layer of intensity. That’s exactly what we need heading into the Currie Cup. Once we face Boland, we want to be sharp and ready to hit the ground running.

“It’s going to be another big one, especially considering how the SA Cup started for us. We’re looking to make a statement. It’s going to be game on – we’re excited for a strong Currie Cup campaign.”

The Cheetahs will take on the Griquas on 4 July in Bultfontein, and a week later, on 11 July, they’ll face the Lelos at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein. Kick-off for the Georgia game is scheduled for 19:00.
