‘I hope to see them become the best versions of themselves’ - Franco─── MORGAN PIEK 08:07 Tue, 05 Aug 2025

The young Smith brothers could find themselves in action against each other on Saturday when the Sharks host the Toyota Cheetahs in Durban in round three of the Currie Cup.
The brothers – sons of Glasgow Warriors and former Cheetahs coach Franco Smith – both made their Currie Cup debut during the opening two rounds of the tournament.
The elder sibling, Franco Jr, made his debut for the Cheetahs on Friday night in their 42-25 victory over the Pumas in Bloemfontein. His younger brother, Juan, a Junior Springbok flyhalf, featured in the Sharks’ first two matches of the campaign.

The brothers are continuing the Smith family legacy in South African rugby. Their father, Franco, and uncle, MJ Smith, both represented Free State in the Currie Cup. Franco went on to play for Griquas and the Blue Bulls in the competition and also earned nine Test caps and nine tour match appearances for the Springboks, scoring 85 points in total.
While it’s still uncertain whether both brothers will be selected for this weekend’s clash in Durban, there’s a strong possibility they’ll face off on the field.
Their proud father, Franco, told OFM Sport that while he’s a Cheetahs man at heart, he wants nothing more than for both his sons to succeed.
“I played for Free State and later coached the Cheetahs – so it’s obvious that I’d love to see them perform well,” said Smith.
“But on the other hand, I’d also love to see Jean play well and get the opportunity to keep growing in his rugby journey. I think he’s on a good path and has all the potential.
“I hope the Sharks find their rhythm in the next week or so, and that he plays well.

“So, from a winning point of view, my heart lies in Cheetah country – but I really want both of them to play well. If they get the opportunity, I hope Franco and Jean both take another step forward on their journey.
“I believe both of them can become quality players. Hopefully, this weekend will be competitive but also meaningful in helping them become the best versions of themselves.”
Saturday’s Currie Cup clash between the defending champions and the Cheetahs takes place at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Durban. Kick-off is at 17:10.
