The Toyota Cheetahs will be looking to sharpen up their lineouts as they prepare to face the Sharks in Durban on Saturday in round three of the Currie Cup.

The Cheetahs head into the third-round match with renewed confidence after a 42–25 win over the Pumas last week, while the defending champions are still hunting for their first victory of the campaign.

The Sharks were beaten 46–5 by the Lions in Johannesburg in the opening round and were thumped 64–0 by the Bulls in Pretoria this past weekend.

Saturday marks the Sharks’ first home game of the season, and they’ll be determined to raise their game. For the visitors from Bloemfontein, this could prove to be a potential banana peel fixture.

The Cheetahs forwards coach, Tiaan Liebenberg, told OFM Sport that the team, and particularly the pack, showed great intent during the win against the Pumas. While the scrum held up well, the lineout still needs polishing.

“Yes, definitely. I think we came together really well as a team and the guys played some good rugby,” said the former Springbok and Stormers hooker.

“One thing we’ve always emphasised is intent – doing things with purpose – and I think you could see that on Friday night.

“The hunger and intent were there, and the players really delivered. From a forward’s point of view, our scrums went well. We would’ve liked more success and a bit more accuracy at lineout time, but overall, we’re happy with the performance.”

Liebenberg added that the Sharks, despite their struggles so far, remain a quality outfit and cannot be underestimated – especially at home.

“It’s still the Sharks. They’ve got a great squad with solid depth – they don’t sign average players,” he said.

“We’re under no illusion. Playing in Durban, there might be a few changes, and we definitely need to be up for it.

“They’ve come up against two strong sides and are blooding young players, but they’re still a very talented group and a well-coached unit.”

Saturday’s match at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Durban kicks off at 17:10.
