Former Cheetahs and Springbok fullback Bevin Fortuin passes away at 46─── MORGAN PIEK 21:28 Thu, 11 Sep 2025

The former Toyota Cheetahs and Springboks fullback, Bevin Fortuin, sadly passed away on Thursday from a suspected heart attack.
Fortuin, who enjoyed an illustrious career as both a player and a coach, was 46 years old at the time of his passing.
He began his professional rugby career with the South Western Districts (SWD) Eagles in George before moving to the Cheetahs in 2005. He represented the Bloemfontein-based side for four years in both the Currie Cup and Super Rugby.

Fortuin was part of the history-making Cheetahs team that won the 2005 Currie Cup title after famously beating the Bulls 29-25 at Loftus Versfeld — only their second-ever championship. Fortuin also scored a try in that famous final in the capital city. A year later, he lifted the Currie Cup again when the Cheetahs shared the title with the Bulls after a dramatic 28-28 draw in Bloemfontein.
During this period, he also earned his Springbok debut against Ireland in 2006. His only other Test appearance came the following year against the Wallabies in the then Tri-Nations.
Fortuin later returned to the Eagles for the 2009 and 2010 Currie Cup First Division campaigns before parting ways with the union in 2011.

After hanging up his boots, he remained involved with the Eagles in a coaching role and also dabbled in local politics in George. In 2015, he moved to Pretoria where he took charge of the Northam Rhinos club side, a position he held until his untimely passing.
The Rhinos confirmed the tragic news in a heartfelt tribute on Thursday afternoon.
“With heavy hearts, we share the sad news of the passing of our beloved head coach, Bevin Fortuin,” the club announced on social media.
