Star Suzuki Griquas loose forward Marco de Witt is set to become the latest Currie Cup champion to earn a crack at the United Rugby Championship after securing a short-term deal with Welsh outfit, the Ospreys.

De Witt, who served as Griquas co-captain earlier this year, has joined the Swansea-based side as injury cover for Welsh international Jac Morgan - a move that opens an exciting new chapter in the 23-year-old’s career.

It will be De Witt’s first taste of the URC and his maiden stint with an overseas-based team. He now follows in the footsteps of Griquas captain Cebo Dlamini, who is in line for his Dragons debut against Connacht at Rodney Parade in Newport on Saturday night.

Earlier this week, Dlamini - who led the Peacock Blues to a historic first Currie Cup title in 55 years in September - linked up with the Dragons and has been named on the bench for their clash against the Galway-based Irish side. The powerful prop did, however, make his URC debut earlier this year during a short-term spell with the Sharks, and ironically it was in the 17-17 draw against the Dragons at Rodney Parade.

Known for his strong ball carries, physical presence and reliable lineout work, De Witt is relishing the opportunity to test himself at a higher level.

“I’m really excited to test myself in a new environment,” said De Witt.

“The Ospreys have a strong reputation and I’m looking forward to cracking on and helping the team in any way I can.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity. The boys have already made me feel welcome and I can already tell that there’s a great set-up here.”

Ospreys head coach Mark Jones also expressed his delight at welcoming the Griquas standout to camp, believing De Witt is the ideal medical joker for Morgan.

“We’re delighted to have Marco at the Ospreys,” said Jones.

“He’s a young player who we feel can improve a lot in our environment.

“He’ll bring a different dynamic to our back-row options, who have been putting in some quality performances in recent weeks. With Jac out injured, it was important to secure suitable cover, and we’re extremely pleased that someone of Marco’s ability was available at this stage of the season.”

De Witt’s debut in black is on ice for now, however, after he was not named in the matchday squad to face Munster in Swansea on Saturday - but his URC journey has officially begun.
