Veteran lock Wegner set for 100th Cheetahs game─── MORGAN PIEK 16:38 Wed, 04 Mar 2026
The Toyota Cheetahs lock, Carl Wegner, is set for a landmark occasion on Friday night when his side hosts the Boland Cavaliers in Bloemfontein in the opening round of the SA Cup.
The fixture not only marks the start of the Cheetahs’ season, but also a significant personal milestone for Wegner, who will earn his 100th cap for the Free State outfit. Having first joined the union in 2012, the experienced lock has built a career defined by resilience, consistency, and a deep-rooted connection to the province.
While his journey took him abroad – with stints at Stade Français in France, Toyota Verblitz in Japan, and Benetton Rugby – Wegner has repeatedly returned to Bloemfontein, bringing with him valuable international experience and leadership.

Now 35, his century of appearances spans a range of competitions, including Super Rugby, the Currie Cup, SA Cup, EPCR Challenge Cup, Guinness PRO14, and other domestic and international tournaments. He also represented the Central Cheetahs between 2013 and 2015, further underlining his long-standing contribution to rugby in the Free State. Across formats, Wegner has remained a dependable figure, known for his physical presence and professionalism.
The second-generation Free State lock told OFM Sport the milestone is a dream realised, but stressed the focus remains firmly on the team’s performance.
“I’m very excited for the SA Cup to start. We’ve been waiting four or five weeks for it, and we’ve been working really hard on what we can fix from the Racing game, as well as what we can build on,” said Wegner.
“There are more positives we can take out of that match, and hopefully we can build on that on Friday evening.
“You’re always excited to play your first proper game of the season. Hawies Fourie and his team have done a great job over the past few seasons with Boland, and what they’ve achieved is full credit to them. This is definitely not a game we can take lightly.
“We’re going to go all guns blazing in the first match, focus on ourselves this weekend, and put all the emphasis on what we can improve as a team.

“Personally, I’ve been waiting a long time for this moment. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a small boy. My children and my wife are very excited for the weekend, and I’m just grateful for the opportunity to represent the Free State in my 100th game.
“It’s a milestone not many players get to achieve, and for me it’s a privilege to pull on the jersey. Hopefully I can go out there, play my best rugby, and give everything I can for the team so that we can succeed.
“At the end of the day, this weekend isn’t about me – it’s about the team and how we can keep improving for the season ahead.”
Wegner's late father, Callie Wegner, also represented the Free State in his playing days.
Friday’s clash between the Cheetahs and Boland Cavaliers at Toyota Stadium kicks off at 18:00.
