MPs vote in favour of dissolving National Assembly ahead of elections

MPs vote in favour of dissolving National Assembly ahead of elections | News Article

MPs in the National Assembly have on Thursday voted in favour of a resolution that Parliament be dissolved ahead of the 8 May elections.

In line with the Constitution and with Parliament dissolved, President Cyril Ramaphosa can now officially proclaim the elections in the Government Gazette.

The dissolution of the House was made necessary because the date of the election has been set for 8 May, which is before the term of the current National Assembly ends.

However, MPs can still complete unfinished business as they are allowed to function until the day before the first day of polling for the next National Assembly.

Members of the National Council of Provinces, on the other hand, will rise on 28 March. However, they will remain in office until after the scheduled elections, until the day of the first sitting of the provincial legislatures.
