2019 Easter fatalities decrease─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 14:22 Thu, 02 May 2019
The number of road fatalities during the 2019 Easter weekend has decreased as compared to the same period last year.
This is according to Transport Minister, Blade Nzimande. Releasing a preliminary report on this year’s Easter Road Safety Campaign, Nzimande highlighted that the number decreased from 309 in 2018 to 162 in 2019.
He, however, alluded that it is still of great concern that there is a number of people who still lose their lives on the roads.
128 crashes were recorded this year as compared to 238 recorded last year. He said the Easter period is mainly characterized by increased traffic volumes and it's unfortunate that the poor and working class are worst affected by road carnage.
Nzimande says law enforcement agencies conducted operations and increased visibility on the roads in efforts to curb transgressions.
The highest decrease was recorded in Limpopo and KwaZulu Natal.
He added that during the Easter operations, they stopped more than 177 thousands vehicles as compared to the 150 thousand stopped during road blocks last year, and that this helped to ensure that motorist abide to the traffic laws.
