Legal Aid SA employees suspend strike─── 14:37 Fri, 23 Aug 2019
Legal Aid SA on Friday said striking employees had resolved to suspend their industrial action and return to work.
"Legal Aid South Africa employees have suspended their strike action until further notice. The employees who went on strike have resolved to return to work. As such, service at all courts and Legal Aid SA offices nationwide has returned to normal," said the entity which provides professional legal advice and representation to those who can’t afford it.
On Monday Legal Aid workers downed tools, which disrupted proceedings in some lower courts around the country, mostly in Gauteng.
The employees went on strike over cuts to their benefits.
Legal Aid SA said it "welcomes" the news of the suspension of the strike. However, It did not say if the cuts to employee benefits had been reversed.
"The impact on the functioning of the country’s courts was minimal, as contingency plans were put in place by local management teams in order to continue to serve the public to the best of our ability," said Legal Aid.
"Our employees are our greatest asset in ensuring that access to justice is made real in South Africa. We are pleased to resume serving the public and ensuring that their constitutional rights are upheld."
